Image Processing in Radiation Therapy

Images from CT, MRI, PET, and other medical instrumentation have become central to the radiotherapy process in the past two decades, thus requiring medical physicists, clinicians, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and trainees to integrate and segment these images efficiently and accurately in a clinical environment. Image Processing in Radiation Therapy presents an up-to-date, detailed treatment of techniques and algorithms for the registration, segmentation, reconstruction, and evaluation of imaging data. It describes how these tools are used in radiation planning, treatment delivery, and outcomes assessment.

 

The book spans deformable registration, segmentation, and image reconstruction and shows how to incorporate these practices in radiation therapy. The first section explores image processing in adaptive radiotherapy, online monitoring and tracking, dose accumulation, and accuracy assessment. The second section describes the mathematical approach to deformable registration. The book presents similarity metrics used for registration techniques, discussing their effectiveness and applicability in radiation therapy. It also evaluates parametric and nonparametric image registration techniques and their applications in radiation therapy processes. The third section assesses the efficiency, robustness, and breadth of application of image segmentation approaches, including atlas-based, level set, and registration-based techniques. The fourth section focuses on advanced imaging techniques for radiotherapy, such as 3D image reconstruction and image registration using a graphics processor unit.

Nonthermal processes can be used for the inactivation of food-spoilage microorganisms without affecting the quality of the food. High pressure technology is gaining importance in the food industry because of the advantages of inactivating the microorganisms and enzymes and producing high quality foods .
Processing and equipment

The construction of high pressure machinery is a specialised and expensive operation .This is being adapted for use in the food industry and batch presses are available.The main components of a high pressure system are:

 a pressure vessel and its closure
 a pressure generation system
 a temperature control device
 a materials handling system.

Most pressure vessels are made from a high tensile steel alloy ‘monoblocs’ (forged from a single piece of material), which can withstand pressures of 400–600 MPa. For higher pressures, pre-stressed multi-layer or wire-wound vessels are used.

There are two methods of processing foods in high pressure vessels: in-container processing and bulk processing

using high-pressure treatment without the application of heat. The jams were vivid and natural in color and taste. In the United States and Europe, developments are being made in fruit products, ready meals, dairy products, meats, fish,and others. Several new industrial applications are expected soon.

Adaptive Control and Adaptive Signal Processing are areas of sufficient importance and maturity to warrant the publication of a journal exclusively devoted to these topics. The International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing is concerned with the design synthesis and application of estimators or controllers for uncertain systems. Papers which cover all aspects of the theory and application of adaptive systems are of interest. Contributions which explore the links between Adaptive Signal Processing and Control will be encouraged. Some papers on the design of controllers or estimators for uncertain systems which may not be strictly adaptive also fall within the scope of the journal. Application papers are particularly encouraged along with those which deal with the numerical aspects of the algorithms. Papers on the related aspects of software engineering expert systems intelligent control and filtering algorithms are also sought.
