It is now over fifty years since criminological teaching and research was established in Oxford by the distinguished refugee from Nazi Germany, Dr Max Grünhut. Building on the foundations laid down by Dr Grünhut, Dr Nigel Walker established a Penal Research Unit in 1966 with the assistance of a grant from the Nuffield Foundation. In 1971 it became a department of the University with a Committee of Management representing both the Law and Social Studies Faculties. Three years after Dr Roger Hood was appointed to the Readership in 1973 (in succession to Dr Walker) the Penal Research Unit moved to Bevington Road and changed its name to the Centre for Criminological Research to reflect the broader range of its interests and research activities. In 1991 the Centre became part of the Law Faculty. In August 2004 the Centre changed its name to the Centre for Criminology, and moved to the Manor Road Building, next to the Law Faculty
